JIN JUDO

GREATER CINCINNATI JUDO

COME LEARN THE JAPANESE MARTIAL ART OF JUDO

Come learn the Japanese martial art of Judo. In this dynamic, energetic art, you learn to use your opponent’s momentum to your advantage with throws, sweeps, and pinning, as well as other techniques.

Our training program emphasizes a safe, but disciplined training environment for beginners and experienced judo players alike.

Traditional judo is emphasized, along with the competitive techniques successful in competition. The members of our club practice judo for many reasons. In our club, you can pursue any or all of these goals.

INSTRUCTION

None of the club’s senseis (instructors) or support are paid for the many hours of work they volunteer to teach our students. Among the instructors are many years of experience and expertise. They are well qualified to teach and share not just attack and defense techniques, but all aspects of Judo.

Hello, I’m the short guy in the center. I have loved judo since I first tried it when I was six years old. I love thinking about, practicing, competing and coaching judo. I started competing nationally and internationally as a junior. I continued judo, but added wrestling into the mix in middle and high school. During College I was a NCAA wrestler for Ohio University. We wrestled against the likes of Iowa and Oklahoma. I also competed in the collegiate nationals in judo for Ohio University.

I continued to compete in judo after college and began to train in MMA as well. In 2006, I started a judo club called Northern Kentucky Judo with John Caamano. John moved to China and I moved the club to Ohio and renamed it Jin Judo. Since then we have been working out and going to tournaments as much as possible. I enjoy teaching traditional and competition-style judo. The workouts keep me in shape and are a lot less boring then running on a treadmill. I look forward to meeting you and possibly training with you.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

How long are your classes and what do they contain?2021-08-02T19:48:53+00:00

Classes are 90 minutes long. Classes consist of warmup exercises, uchikomi (standing throwing drills), newaza uchikomi (groundfighting drills), timed newaza randori (groundfighting sparring with different partners), and timed tachiwaza randori (standing sparring with different partners.)

What can I expect from my first class?2021-08-02T19:49:26+00:00

Depending on your experience, you will be paired up with an experienced member who will introduce you to the various components of the class and basic techniques. You will set your own pace of learning with thoughtful and safe guidance from the instructors to help you.

What are some general etiquette I should follow?2021-08-02T19:50:14+00:00

Please remove all jewelry including rings, earrings, necklaces, or basically anything that is metal.

  • Please trim your fingernails and toenails.
  • Please keep your gi clean.
  • Please bow when entering and exiting the mat area.
  • Please have only bare feet on the mat.
Do I need a uniform to participate in trial class?2021-08-02T19:59:06+00:00

No, but it would be good to have one. Just indicate that you need a gi for your first class in your email along with your height and weight.  Arrangements will be made to have a loaner uniform (just the top) for class.

Why do you bow in class?2021-08-02T19:59:39+00:00

Bowing in judo is a gesture of respect, much like a handshake. It is not subservient and it has no religious significance.

Will I get to spar?2021-08-02T20:00:20+00:00

If you are taking a trial-basis free class, you will be asked to observe the randori (sparring), otherwise you will spar in a safe and controlled way with our senior students, usually from the very first day.

How is Judo different from Karate or other martial arts?2021-08-02T20:01:18+00:00

Judo is more a sport than Karate or other forms of martial arts. Judo is an Olympic event and judo is more akin to wrestling with jackets than to Karate or Tae Kwon Do. Olympic judo has no kicks or punches. Scoring is by throwing your opponent to the ground, strangle holds, arm bars, and hold down techniques.

How old should kids be to start?2021-08-02T20:02:34+00:00

There is not a definitive age. But usually age six and up is recommended. It is a developmental issue more so than age. A child must know their left from their right, be able to follow four consecutive instructions, and work independently from his or her parents. We recommend any parent considering enrolling their child in Judo bring him or her to at least one class to observe prior to joining.

Do you have contracts?2021-08-02T20:03:08+00:00

All students must complete a dojo membership form and a waiver of liability. There is no contract form. At registration, new students pay an annual membership fee for Jin Judo and the U.S. Judo Federation (USJF), purchase a new Judo-Gi, and pay the first month’s training dues. Thereafter, they pay monthly training dues the first week of each month. Any attendance to a practice during the course of a month requires the student to pay the full month’s training dues.

Are private lessons available?2021-08-02T20:03:46+00:00

Because all of our black belt instructors are volunteers and have professions outside of judo, private lessons are not available. Judo practice is founded on the spirit of synergy and mutual welfare and benefit. The more participants in a class, the wider are the variety of styles and learning opportunities.
